For as long as I can remember, I've always been exposed to makeup. As a dancer (since the tender age of 4), I was expected to have my "stage face" on when recital came around. At home, I would look on in awe as my Aunty applied her makeup with flawless precision. It was sort of inevitable for me to develop a passion for makeup.

After years of honing my craft, I opened my first business, Beat by Qui, sometime in 2016. It was an uphill battle but eventually I was able to build up a loyal clientele. After about 8 months in operation, I decided to do a complete rebranding. Thus, the Lock and Qui enterprise was born.

I spent months working out the finer details and eventually launched Lock and Qui Makeup Artistry on January 22nd, 2017. Business was great for the next couple of months as people flocked to the next new thing. My client base built up even more and I'm pleased to say that I have retained most of these clients to this day.

That same year, I became interested in aesthetics and cosmetic chemistry. I would spend hours upon hours reading up on these topics, my desire to learn as much as I could outweighing anything else I had going on in my life.

It was in 2018 that I decided to take a leap and start my cosmetics line. It was definitely a Labour of Love and much of my prep was done behind the scenes. I dropped vague hints to my friends here and there but no one really knew the true nature of my plans. Call me superstitious but I didn’t want to “jinx” anything until I was absolutely sure that this was the route I wanted to take.

Fast forward to 2019 and I was finally ready to launch my line. I had my date and everything -September 22nd (a nice 20th birthday gift to myself). Life had different plans though. I was able to launch by that date and sell a few products but eventually I had to put things on pause for personal reasons.

Don’t get me wrong, I was still making movements behind the scenes in true Qui fashion but I stopped taking orders and didn’t post any new products on social media like I said I would.

At this point, the reasons why aren’t important but if this recent pandemic has taught me anything, it’s that life is short. Regardless of what is going on, it’s better to take the plunge and weather the storm rather than waiting or procrastinating.

I have a new outlook on how I want my 2020 to end and it’s with this resolution that I plan to put a reset on my business and start selling again. Due to the current climate, I don’t know when but rest assured that when things get back to a level of normalcy, your girl will be grinding harder than ever before 💪🏽

Until then my loves!
